After three years away, we are delighted that this year’s Housing Law Conference will once again be held IN-PERSON. On-line registration will be available for those who cannot attend in person. This is a great opportunity for colleagues across the sector to meet for hands-on training seminars, keynote speeches and the all important social. This year’s theme is the modern housing lawyer; how can we best serve an ever-growing client base, how can we engage with and influence reform and how can we protect and build our sector.
The backdrop
2022 seems to be the year of housing law reform as the much-anticipated A fairer private rented sector white paper promises a major shake up of possession proceedings for private renters and Fitness of homes for human habitation laws come into force in Wales. Whether the changes will have the promised benefits in practice remains to be seen, but it is clear that 2022 has seen a renewed focus on housing insecurity, poor conditions and high rents.
How should we, as housing lawyers, respond? And how can we use this moment to push for the changes that tenants so badly need in a fast-changing legal and policy landscape? Crucially, how can we make sure that the sector survives, as fixed recoverable costs and ever-increasing overheads threaten the livelihoods of firms and law centres?
Legal reforms won’t work if people don’t have access to the legal advice and representation necessary to help them enforce their rights. There is an ever-growing need for housing and social welfare lawyers as renters face rising bills, falling incomes and increasing rents. Keeping the sector alive means not only protecting our existing base but also supporting the next generation of housing lawyers.
Against this backdrop, it is more important than ever for housing practitioners join forces to speak up for our clients, share knowledge and experience and support each other.
We look forward to welcoming plenary speakers HHJ Jan Luba KC, Liz Davies KC, Garden Court Chambers, Giles Peaker, Anthony Gold Solicitors and Nearly Legal and John Gallagher, Shelter.
