This year’s Housing Law Conference will once again be held on a hybrid basis. This is a great opportunity for colleagues across the sector to meet both in person and virtually for hands-on training seminars, keynote speeches and the annual social event. The cost of attending the conference has been maintained at last year’s level to encourage maximum participation.
The backdrop
The main theme of the conference is The Impact of Racism on Housing. Recent surveys by Shelter and the Joseph Rowntree Trust highlight how the current housing emergency manifests itself most acutely in the structural inequalities and injustices it perpetuates, denying minority groups the right to safe and secure homes. Statistics indicate that the BAME communities are disproportionately likely to be homeless, living in temporary accommodation or in deprived neighbourhoods.
How should we, as housing lawyers, respond? Legal reforms will not work if people do not have access to the legal advice and representation necessary to help them enforce their rights. Against this backdrop, it is more important than ever for housing practitioners to join forces to speak up for our clients, share knowledge and experience and support each other.
The conference will include the following plenary speakers:
- Martin Forde KC, 1 Crown Office Row, formerly Independent Advisor to the Windrush Compensation Scheme
- Elizabeth Dwomoh, Lamb Chambers
- Christian Weaver, Garden Court North Chambers
- Abdi Hassan, Coffee Afrik CIC
- Rebekah Carrier, Miles & Partners
- John Gallagher, Shelter
As usual there will also be a selection of informative seminars, dealing with key topics including:
- EPA and disrepair
- How to use the Public Sector Equality Duty to tackle divergent outcomes
- Hostile environment impact on minority groups
- Practical tips on PHPs and housing needs assessments
- Conducting discrimination trials, including the use of assessors
- Hoarding in possession claims
The full programme for the conference will be available shortly. It will be another not to be missed event.
The conference will be followed by a social event for conference delegates and HLPA members.
