This year’s poster competition is also being managed virtually. Abstracts must be submitted at time of registration (and by 1 November). Shortlisted submissions will be notified by 6 November and asked to upload a digital poster to our poster platform by 20 November.
Delegates who have a successful submission may also have the opportunity to submit a short video (60-90 seconds) to accompany their poster. Details of this will be shared with you when you receive details of the success of your submission.
Posters are to be presented in plain English and answer the question: What have you done to be more inclusive in your research?
Abstracts submitted must describe work that you have carried out/plan to carry out as part of your NIHR award and the research must meet the NIHR research remit (i.e. have the potential to benefit patients within 5 years of its completion. Basic research or research involving animals is not within remit).

There will be an opportunity to take part in a fun and interactive activity. This will be an opportunity to meet and connect with other NIHR Academy Members. During the activity, your team will take a virtual globe-trotting trip around the world, visiting 22 countries across 40,000 virtual miles and invited to complete a series of tasks and answer questions to compete against other teams.

1. Resources and toolkits for increasing participation from diverse communities in research

Poor engagement of underrepresented groups in research can be an issue in any part of the research pathway from developing the idea through to dissemination and implementation of findings. Drawing on resources available the workshop will aim to equip participants with access to information that will help plan inclusive, accessible research that is relevant to the diverse population.
2. Research and Wikipedia: How to increase the visibility, accuracy and accessibility of health and care information on the world’s most popular encyclopaedia

In this session you will learn how influential Wikipedia is as a platform for the dissemination of health and care research, understand the editorial guidelines and explore how we can all help improve the visibility, accuracy and accessibility of health and care information and research on Wikipedia to better inform the public and influence more inclusiveness in health and care research.
3. Involvement and engagement with adults from marginalised groups

For research to address the diverse needs of patients and of multicultural communities, it is essential that the approaches to PPIE are informed by the voices of people in marginalised groups and that we partner with relevant organisations already established within communities. In this workshop you will learn from examples of involvement and engagement with marginalised groups including adults with lived experience of homelessness, self-harm and/or suicide, visually impaired adults and adults from BAME communities. The facilitators will share their experiences on how to develop effective partnerships with voluntary organisations and charities and how to make involvement and engagement meetings more inclusive.
4. Smashing the glass ceiling: Encouraging inclusive participation in clinical academia

This workshop will consider a range of barriers faced by clinical academics. Case studies have been developed from a recent national study looking at barriers and enablers to clinical academic careers. Using case studies, participants will work with the facilitators to develop strategies to overcome barriers and create more inclusive research environments. Cases will focus on protected characteristics, barriers associated with working across clinical and academic environments and policy barriers. It is hoped that participants will take away action plans that can be utilised in their own environments, as well as strategies to tackle issues such as microaggressions and moving beyond optical allyship.
5. The integration, development, evaluation and impact of EDI in research: The ASPIRE model

We have been striving to establish fully inclusive research environments in academia for over 30 years. Despite substantial investment, however, there is very little evidence that diversity and inclusion have become embedded in our institutions. This workshop will explore the fundamental need for equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in research, consider the building blocks of a fully-inclusive research environment, and discuss how this can impact a long-term behavioural and culture change.
6. Research with underserved communities: Learnings from a collaboration with Gypsy and Traveller communities

7. How to facilitate virtual PPI meetings and events

Engaging patients, service users, carers and the public using virtual platforms brings with it exciting opportunities for reaching a wider audience. However there are challenges when engaging virtually. This session will provide you with insights on how to design and deliver accessible, inclusive virtual workshops and sessions to maximise productivity and engagement. You will also learn about the different roles and tasks involved in hosting successful virtual events, and will have access to a sample script which you can use to inform your own session design.
8. Advanced presentation skills: Enhance your impact and influence through your presentations in-person and online

Excellent presentation skills have never been more important and the need to present virtually makes these challenges even greater. Presenters need to know how to capture and hold the ear of their listeners who expect a shorter but more dynamic presentation style and as presentation technology increases in quality, so does the need to speak effectively in public. This session will support you to design and deliver more effective presentations at meetings, events, conferences, lectures and pitches by focusing on what makes a successful talk.
