Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in health and care research Summer School

Building partnerships through creativity and justice:

3-5 July 2024

Mercure Exeter Rougemont Hotel

PPIE in research has never been more recognised and important in health and care research. It’s important for people to have a say in publicly funded research and be given the opportunity to make decisions, shape, and learn about research which might affect them; to work with research in a way that is done ‘for’ or ‘with’ them, rather than ‘to’ or ‘about’ them. Public involvement in research can make research stronger and more relevant.

First held successfully in 2023, this unique event is an opportunity to explore beyond the numbers and the rhetoric. We will consider innovative and honest ways to create and spread knowledge and will explore how to foster its uptake through partnerships with care sectors, the public and communities; partnerships that reflect integrity, creativity and justice.

Dr Kristin Liabo (PPIE Team Lead for NIHR PenARC) has brought together a team with a wide range of expertise which includes members of the PenARC PPIE team, colleagues at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, colleagues from NIHR infrastructure across the South West, and PenARC patient and public partners. Co-designed and co-delivered by them, this will be an informative and thought-provoking experience for researchers and others with an interest in Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE).

What will you learn?

  • Why PPIE matters and how it works – and sometimes doesn’t work!
  • Putting justice at the heart of partnerships between patients, communities, and researchers
  • The role of creativity in PPIE and how we achieve equality in co-creation
  • Capturing and measuring PPIE - ticking boxes or bringing it to life

Who is it for?

The course is relevant to researchers undertaking health and care research, including PhD students, and people in PPIE co-ordinator/facilitator roles, including in the NHS and universities. Linking research and practice, it will be tailored to meet the needs of those who are working across different disciplines in healthcare, social care, and public health.
